From the protection of critical assets in the Baltic region to the European Union’s continuing focus on the resilience of energy, transport and communications infrastructure, global security engineering is shifting from “is the individual product strong enough?” to “can the complete system remain reliable over its design life?” For 358 anti-climb fencing, should the post—not only the mesh panel—also be reconsidered?

In 2025, NATO launched Baltic Sentry to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure, including subsea pipelines and cables. In July 2026, the European Commission issued further guidance on critical-infrastructure resilience, with emphasis on natural and human-induced risks. These international initiatives address different operating environments, but they communicate the same principle: security cannot depend on a single component; it must form an integrated system extending from the perimeter and detection to response and maintenance.

As the first visible line of physical perimeter protection, is metal fencing still merely a standard item on the engineering bill of materials? As nuclear power facilities, correctional institutions, data centres, energy sites and transport hubs continue to raise their protection requirements, is the value of a 358 fence really determined only by mesh aperture, wire diameter and panel mass?

Is the Value of 358 Fencing Limited to the Small-Aperture Mesh Panel?

358 welded wire mesh is characterised by its dense, small-aperture configuration. The mesh reduces usable handholds and footholds and makes it more difficult to operate common hand tools through the apertures. It is therefore frequently considered for high-security perimeter applications. However, irrespective of panel strength, can the installed fence fully realise the design intent if the posts, connectors and fixing methods are still assembled as an ad hoc combination?

International engineering clients are paying increasing attention to system scope and interface responsibility: Who designs the mesh panel? Is the post fully compatible? Can the connections be inspected and maintained? Can corners, changes in ground level, security topping and protective coating be detailed as one coordinated package? This means that a fence manufacturer cannot simply supply a mesh panel; it must understand the engineering logic of the complete perimeter run.

Square Posts Are Already Established. Why Develop an I-Section Post?

Square hollow-section posts have a clear structural form, broad application and installation procedures familiar to site teams. Developing an I-section post is not intended to invalidate the established square-post solution. It addresses a different question: when a project requires a high-security fence with a more distinctive product identity, a cleaner elevation and a more consistent appearance on both sides of the boundary, can the manufacturer provide an alternative structural solution?

Comando developed a cold-formed I-section post for 358 mesh. Viewed from the public side, the post forms a clean vertical line. Viewed from the secure side, the mesh panel, post and fixing locations retain a similarly integrated appearance. Compared with a conventional square post, the system has a more distinctive visual character; however, the design focus is not simply a different shape. The post section and the connection requirements of the 358 mesh panel have been reconsidered as one coordinated design.

Has Only the Post Changed, or the Entire Connection Logic?

True product development does not mean giving an ordinary steel tube a different external profile. According to the 358G product data, the system comprises a 358 welded-mesh panel, a cold-formed I-section post, dedicated connection components and tamper-resistant bolts. A typical post section is 54.4 × 100 mm, while wall thickness, post length and protective coating may be adjusted to suit fence height, loading conditions and project requirements.

When the post section, fixing locations and component geometry are coordinated during product development, site installation does not have to rely on uncontrolled drilling, temporary welding or inconsistent hardware combinations. On long perimeter runs, this standardisation affects not only installation productivity, but also future inspection, localised replacement and visual consistency.

For the purchaser, the final choice between an I-section post and a square hollow-section post must, of course, be based on the project drawings, budget and applicable local codes. What is more likely to convince an international buyer is not a manufacturer’s claim that one post type is “more advanced”, but its ability to translate the project’s functional and architectural requirements into section design, connection development, production validation and complete installation detailing.

Square Hollow-Section Posts and I-Section Posts: A Structural Comparison for 358 Fencing

The comparison below shows a 358 fence with square hollow-section posts on the left and a 358 fence with I-section posts on the right. Both systems can be used with small-aperture 358 welded-mesh panels, but they present different design approaches in post geometry, panel fixing, appearance from both sides and overall system identity. Square hollow-section posts are mature and widely used; the I-section post coordinates the post geometry with a dedicated fixing arrangement and therefore offers another system-based option. The 358 I-section post fence may be configured to suit fence height, loading conditions, protective coating and the project specification.

High-security projects still require systematic, project-specific verification of wind loading, post centres, foundation dimensions, corrosion-protection system, security topping, gate-zone structure, intrusion-alarm detection and access-control requirements. The fence is a physical barrier, but it is also a mounting platform and interface for the wider security system. The more complete the product design, the easier it is for the engineer to integrate the fence into the overall perimeter-security scheme rather than treat it as an isolated mesh-panel purchase.

What Does a Single Post Actually Change in a 358 Fence?

First, it changes the visual experience. A conventional high-security fence does not have to present a single, heavy engineering appearance. A more consistent architectural result can be achieved on both the secure and public sides of the boundary.

More importantly, it changes the product boundary. The manufacturer is no longer supplying only a mesh panel; it begins to treat the post section, connection components, fixings and installation method as an engineered system that can be developed and verified. This is why the I-section post represents more than simply “a different shape”.

As global perimeter-security requirements continue to rise, when the next international client asks about a 358 fence, will the discussion still be limited to price per square metre and wire diameter?
